Since the Middle Ages, kilns that produce fine ceramics have been lit in Faenza.
The story goes that Marco Polo brought pasta and the Garofano model from the East in 1279.
Faenza is traditionally defined as the City of Ceramics, it is located 30 miles south of Bologna in the north-east of Italy, and while an important agricultural as well as industrial center, it owes its fame to ceramics.
Faenza's role in the field of ceramics is well known: its name, in the French version Faience, has meant for centuries a prestigious ceramics; no other ceramic-producing city can boast of having kept its stoves alight since the ancient Middle Ages.
The Garofano design was initially developed in the Italian region of Lombardy, but later became a world-famous signature model from the majolica city of Faenza.
