The most beloved Portuguese cartoonist of the 19th century, Bordallo Pinheiro was famous for creating the character "Ze Povinho", a rustic worker who is kind to his friends and contemptuous of those with money and power. His art style blends the honest realism of the late 19th-century Arts and Crafts movement with the dramatic, even grotesque, features of Goya's early paintings.
In 1884, he and his son founded a factory of the same name in Caldas da Rainha, along the Portuguese coast, to create extravagant and naturalistic pieces of majolica based on his art. Due to the special minerals present in the local soil and the skill of the artisans of the area, Caldas da Rainha is known as the capital of Portuguese pottery. Today the factory brings Pinheiro's original style into the 21st century with satirical portraits of modern celebrities, while continuing its old, hand-made style in the Portuguese pottery tradition.
